Büfé Keleti, Budapest

IMG_7187
Tucked away in a hidden corner on the side entrance of Budapest’s magnificent Keleti train station, this small café is a real gem. It doesn’t care about trends or looking fancy. Here local working class travellers along with dark-skinned people from the Balkans or Turkey come to sip a pint or have a last cheap pálinka before boarding the train away from the Hungarian capital. At this Büfé, which even doesn’t have a name, time is a relative concept: it just stood still. When you enter this place, you feel that you have left the western world behind and are slowly entering the proverbial orient. Maybe “orient” is also the real name of this hidden refuge.
